This unique pyrogen is a reproduction of those found throughout Europe (and in particular - France) in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. At that time, it was common to see a matchstrike sitting on a bistro table or bar. Upper cylindrical container was used to hold the matches. the rippled/rough surface on the side (or base) was used to strike and light the match.
They're a charming gift or addition to your own home, and can be used to hold a variety of objects aside from matches, such as cocktail sticks on your dining table.
